Picking Ourselves Up Off the Ice After Getting Punched in the Mouth

2014 has been a year to remember.  It began with the worst Winter in our history and the loss of two of our bravest. The past 11 months has been tough and we have been punched more than one time in the mouth.

One of the biggest days of the year for our Toledo Police Department and Toledo Fire & Rescue Department is coming.  It’s a day that gives the boys in blue and the boys who drive red trucks a day to blow off some steam in a friendly competition.  It’s the 4th Annual Battle of the Badges: Toledo Fire Vs. Toledo Police Charity Hockey Game, which happens at the Huntington Center on Saturday November 22.

This is the first of two games, with the second happening during Winterfest at Fifth Third Field.

In the years previous– the attendance is not where it should’ve been.  The stands were mostly filled with TPD & TFRD family members.

This year, this game… deserves to be different.

What a perfect opportunity to show our bravest, on the ice or off, how much we appreciate the job they do… and in a non-traditional way.

Monies raised will go to will go to the Toledo Firefighters Local 92 Charities, or Toledo Police Charities.

I think after the year we had… the heartache all of these men have endured, the least we can do is show up, pay a couple of bucks, drink a beer, and watch a hockey game.

Nobody will care who you’ll be rooting for, but only that you are there.

Next Saturday won’t be about three periods of hockey– it will be about a city that knows how to pick itself up off the ice, no matter how much it’s hurt–  that the cold and the ice won’t keep us down.  That you can punch us in the mouth and we’ll stand right back up.

Every person who laces up the skates, grabs a stick, jumps the boards, and chases the puck– will be thinking about two guys who couldn’t make it.

As these amateur hockey players are having this thought, they deserve to be surrounded by a packed house of people who appreciate what they risk each and every time they answer a call or when the fire bell rings.

It may be only a game.. but it doesn’t have to be.  Let’s make it bigger and beautiful.
