It’s never easy being the head of a School District.
All of this positive change and energy that Dr. Romules Durant has brought to TPS and now he is facing a PR problem– a very ugly one.
I am completely disgusted with learning the news of the suspended Scott Basketball Coach who just had a marriage license issued on Monday, with an 18 year-old former student, that graduated in June.
According to the Toledo Blade, “Christopher Richard Dames, 34, was issued a marriage license Monday from Lucas County Probate Court to wed Kierra Nakevia Gibbs, 18, according to court records. Ms. Gibbs attended Scott last year and graduated in June, Toledo Public Schools said.”
Communities trust our children and their futures with this honorable and incredible occupation… then one bad apple hurts the rest.
A marriage license may offer some protection legally, but it will do nothing to protect your name and your word. People are not fooled by a piece of paper that a freshly-turned 18 year-old signed, especially from a girl who believes she’s in love with a man that was a former mentor and teacher.
There are so many amazing teachers in TPS and NW Ohio — then stories like these pop up. There is nothing a school district can do until something bad happens.
Human beings will always be human beings– laws and ethics will always be broken.
The NFL is spending a lot of money researching the human brain, focusing on damage caused by concussions. There will be no surprise in the results; we all know what caused the damage– two 300-lb trained professional athletes banging heads, hundreds of times a week, for many years in a row.
Instead of focusing on brains of former NFL athletes, why don’t we study the brains of people who expose themselves at a park or the brains of teachers who violated the community’s trust with no impulse control. With all the attention and constant stream of news stories involving teacher-student inappropriate relationships, nothing seems to prevent another brain from doing it once again.
Why isn’t there more monies being dedicated to figuring out why these brain can’t control an impulse?
If you know you have an impulse problem–pick another profession.. get some help.
